Server, Site, Money and the future. (please read/respond)

Post by noverflow »

The site has grown, and boy has it grown. We are about 24 times more popular than a year ago.

We are getting too big for shared hosting soon. So what's next?

Well. Right now, the site costs a little over $40/mo to run. But it is all good. The donations have covered it. The next jump up though is $75/mo (if purchased a year at a time).

It is a big jump i know. We may have to move to what is called a VPS server. in simple terms, it means instead of everyone running around on one big server, we will be moved to our own room so we cant bother others, and they cant bother us. But a room big enough to handle our tuesday traffic would cost the $75/mo.

I am going back to school in one month from today. When I go back, i will not have time to move us over until christmas.

So there are 2 choices.

Move now, and a little early.

Don't move, and hope we dont need it until christmas.

If we do need it before then and we do decide not to move, I will have to take the site off line on tuesdays, or make it a private affair on tuesdays (may not work).

If we move, it will probably cost about $5 per active member to do so for the next year.

Thoughts? Feelings?

I would definately pay the $5 for the ability to use this site...it has easily helped me save 10 times (probably a lot more than that) that just in print costs alone...its a pretty invaluable resource and much better than other art forms that I've been on

Make the Wiki free; charge $5 to access the forums.

HA!
While that may end up working well for my financial problems, I dont think that is necessary. It's a donation, not a subscription fee.

Move now and I'll personally cover the cost of one month. The selling/trading section of this site has saved me way more than that! Whatever you want to do Adam, it is your site!

I agree, $5 to access the restricted areas is a great idea.

I fully understand your point, but if people wants to go deeper in the forum, they have to pay exactly like a lot of internet services with free first step levels and subscription for more deeper services (like flick'r...) plus $5 for a year total access is really cheap...

my .2

I tend to agree with this...I think that it might also help to stem the tide of people who do not actively contribute and only use this as a source for their flipping info

as someone who has been running a forum for the last 4.5 years, i know the pains of growing..

have you considered dreamhost.com?

have you looked into getting site sponsors?

for me, one of the best things i did was find a sponsor for my forum to donate server space / bandwidth in exchange for advertising their hosting... this isn't super hard to do

i don't mind giving up 5 bucks... but you will prob see readership decline if people have to pay to get to certain forums and the what not...

I'm definately not suggesting that it will stop them completely...the big ones will continue it, but it will slow some of the smaller ones

Just charge $5 admission to jasons's area, then cross match it with inactive users who pay/ regions from ebay sellers and bingo!

Kidding.

I bet you could get a few free prints from OG for doing that and giving OG the info.

Jason, have you ever thought about getting Shepard to commission a THEGIANT.ORG print? If it was cool, i think many people would get one.

I mean, we are listed as the definitive site for OBEY GIANT on Shep's site. Maybe contact Jason if Shep wouldn't do it. Shep gets a lot of business from people on this forum.
