Preferenital Treatment From Obey
Preferenital Treatment From Obey
Many of you may already be aware of this, but I thought I'd post it in this forum regardless.
This thread will be used to address some convo I've noticed on OMGposters.com as of late.
It seems that one "Kevin Sutton" is being given preferential treatment by the Obey staff, and is being allowed to purchase his prints before they go on sale to the general public. He not only brags about this on the OMG forums, but furthermore drops the name of his supplier, Jason. He hasn't given Jason a last name as of yet, so I'm not going to point any fingers. I just want this communtiy to see what this guy claims is going on behind everyone's backs.
All of the discussions listed below can be seen in the comments sections on omgposters.com

Look man, I won’t argue with you about Shepard’s
contributions to worthy causes. Everybody knows that he
gives a lot back. It’s common knowledge.
But asking DJ “what are you doing?” is flat out smeared.
Because what he’s doing is contributing to the same causes
that Shepard is by buying his prints.
Your argument would make sense if Shep was simply handing
over large sums of cash without the aid of his patrons. But the
fact of the matter is that Shep couldn’t contribute to these
worthy causes without people investing in his artwork.
Therefore your previous statement has no relevance.
On to my next point. The fact that you are able to go over
everybody’s head and get your prints directly from Obey via
Jason (Filipow I’m guessing) makes everyone here hate you
that much more, and furthermore not respect the business
practices of Obey.
Not that it will effect the sales of Shep’s prints or anything
like that, but how am I to respect what is deemed an equal
opportunity of print acquisition when people like you can
simply jack-off an inside job without having to put up with the
BS that every other serious collector has to? Riddle me that with
something other than “quit hating.”
It’s like this. You can be an Obey fan all day long, and that’s
fine. But simply stating that you’re above it all due to your
connections doesn’t sit well with me at all. And it makes me
lose faith in the Obey organization. Especially when you reveal
your privileged advantages so callously.
Also, taunting and name calling (i.e. wanna be playa; where
are your prints?) makes you look like that much more of an ef’n
d*bag. If you want to make a valid point, then you should
really reconsider ending it with an insult, ya pansy.
^did anyone else see what I did here?

Regardless of where the postings originated, I'd like to hear others opinions on the matter.
And sorry for posting it twice. I'm new to these forums and wasn't sure if I'd made a mistake by posting it in the "Giant vs. Giant" thread (where it has been moved).
I do feel it's worthy of discussion, and I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't. So I'd like to hear the views of others.
Re: Preferenital Treatment From Obey
Is Kevin a monkey spanker? Absolutely.
Is it unfair that he gets his prints early? Naw. Nothing wrong with the Obey team hooking up friends and family. Although I'm sure after seeing this Jason will probably regret hooking this dude up.

Re: Preferenital Treatment From Obey
Fine.
Let's say it IS true. Someone donates a kidney to someone working at Obey, or maybe they share a passion for kiwi fruit, met at a kiwi fan function and developed a life-long bond. The person at Obey feels kindly enough toward the guy to provide him with a print before they're released to the general public.
So what? You don't think other people get advance issues of shoes or video games or cars in just the same way? Big f^cking deal.
But you? You lose "all respect for the Obey organization." Whatever.
If the guy's being a d^ck about it, lose all respect for him, not for Obey.

Comparing this situation to a kidney donation is absolutely absurd. Anyone with any bit of common sense could/should see how asinine that analogy is. I seriously doubt that this guy (kevin) is getting preferential treatment due to his contributions to a life threatening organ donation.
If it's a "homeboy hook-up" kind of situation, then that's fine to a certain extent. But not when the guy getting hooked up is positioning themselves as mouth piece for the organization on the OMG forums. Which is exactly what he's doing by saying that he's got the inside advantage.
What I'm saying here is, IF this guy IS getting hooked-up with prints via a backdoor option provided by a member of the Obey organization, then that member of the organization might want to consider re-evaluating their decision to supply them. Especially when they speak as nonchalantly about it as Kevin has.
Again, no last name for "Jason" has been provided. So nobody knows if it is in fact the same "Jason" that frequents these forums.
Regardless, allowing this guy to drop names and play the role of a privileged patron while making these taunting comments doesn't sit well with me. And it shouldn't with you. Because if what he's saying has any merit, then it does lower my respect for entire organization.
I lost all respect for "Kevin" after his first post on OMG. What I'm trying to accomplish with this thread is a realization of whether or not what he's saying is true.
If it is, then yes, I've lost a lot of respect for Obey. I can't respect a company that contributes to the benefit of knob-jobs like Kevin.

Sorry if this portion of my argument confused anyone. The way it's worded, it sounds like I'm calling out members of the Obey fam. By "they" I'm referring to Kevin. Sorry for any confusion.

Re: Preferenital Treatment From Obey
What if JF is the "Jason" here. And, what if JF hooked someone up. Really none of our business. Though, I would speculate that if that is what happened, it probably will not be happening again when news gets back to JF/Obey. But really, is this any of our business? And, yes, it is totally lame if "Kevin" got a hook up to brag about it. Stupid in fact. That is one sure fire way to kill the golden goose. As was stated, this is the Internet. Don't believe everything you read though. If JF chooses to engage this thread or not is no reflection on him. Further, if something as dopey as this really gets you down, well, that is kind of a shame too. We here at thegiant.org have a saying when sh#t hits the fan. "Ink on paper".

Really. I had absolutely no idea.
Or, let's say I did. And let's say that I just maybe also thought getting a hook-up because he met someone from Obey at a kiwi convention was absurd. Might then the point of my absurd statements be to illustrate it really doesn't matter why he's getting the hook-up, even if it was for an absurd reason?
What I'm saying here is, IF this guy IS getting hooked-up with prints via a backdoor option provided by a member of the Obey organization, then that member of the organization might want to consider re-evaluating their decision to supply them. Oh, yes. I know exactly what you're saying-- and what you're attempting to do. You bumped into an idiot on another forum and now you're using the good graces of this forum to try to get his special privileges revoked. The fact you've chosen to leap from obscurity over this issue (one post, previously, since June of last year) proves as much. You're simply trying to use this forum to put a knife in someone (regardless of his being an idiot or not).
Frankly, I don't appreciate it.
If you have a beef with someone, take it up with them.
If you have a beef with Obey, send them an email.
Don't try to use this space as the fulcrum for your attempted leveraging of the situation. Particularly when you have the ability to communicate directly with Obey at your fingertips.

That thread is locked and I cannot post this response directly on that thread but I am compelled to reply. I am NOT involved in ANY way with brokering any 'backdoor' deals OR information with the admins of omgposters.com. I don't have any relationship with the people that run that site (in fact, when I sent them my own press release for the 'Live at the Masque' print I did with Brendan Mullen and Roger Gastman last fall, it didn't even show up on their proverbial radar). To my knowledge, obeygiant.com does NOT provide any kind of preferential treatment to any of it's online buyers/collectors in exchange for publicity/promotion/etc.
SOOOOO...I hope this quick note puts to rest some of the speculation and rhetoric that was posted on that thread.
