Best paper for silkscreening

Post by submethod »

Hey guys,
I know it's been asked before ( and I couldn't find the thread) about the best paper to use for silkscreening. I need to get paper 18x24 in size that is great for silkscreening.

I use to use Cold Press Bristol Paper but it's a little sketchy when printing. Can anyone recommend good paper? Recycled would be cool too. It's gotta be archival as well.

Thanks!

I think rives bfk is hands down the best BUT it's expensive and comes larger than 18x24 so you have to cut it down

Thanks bro.

Which Rives BFK? Just took a look and i love the frayed edges but looks like it'll have to be cut up and then frayed again.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you... i buy the 250g weight at 22" × 30", it's a good heavy paper. i buy 100 sheets at a time from blicks to save a little money but the price does fluctuate, last summer it was under $2.35 a sheet and now it's $2.71. Buying single sheets will run you anywhere from $4-6 a sheet. i've used the lighter weight paper and while it is still high quality paper, it just seemed to thin to me for art prints.

i've done a ton of researching to find a place to buy the paper from and dickblick's was still the cheapest (even though they opened up a store 10 minutes from me and i now have to pay sales tax on my supplies). because you are on the west coast, take a look at this art store: http://www.rivesbfk.com/

that domain is actually owned by Lenz Arts in California (http://lenzarts.com/contact_us.html) but they use that domain to sell Rives BFK... it's the cheapest around BUT because i'm on the east coast it takes longer to ship than from blick's and the cost of shipping evens out with blick's cost. Shipping would probably be cheaper for you.

these guys are at $2.58 a sheet but i don't know much about them:

FYI, i might be wrong but i believe some (maybe most) banksy prints, as well as faile prints, are done on rives bfk (you can see watermarks in the paper to see what kind was used)... i also think ernesto and phil use rives in their dead relatives prints. it's a popular paper, but like i said can get expensive.

oh, and they come with frayed/deckled edges which occur during the making of the paper. you can make your own pretty easily with this paper but it just won't look as natural. just use a hard edge and tear away.

Thanks man. I actually picked up some of the Strathmore paper with the frayed edges. Runs around 2.50 a pop and the paper measure 22x30. So, now I got to chop it down to 18x24 and find a nice way to distress the one side of the print that is being chopped down. :)
