I noticed some new-old work highlighted under the gallery section of the Obey site. What's got my a bit perplexed is that "stencil collage paintings" which I originally figured as, well, straight up paintings are now referred to as HPMs - at least on the site.
Technically I realize that when Shep paints a piece and does a few copies of it, it's a multiple. But typically I understood HPMs to be silkscreen+painted+hand numbered pieces only. It seemed pretty clear cut to me, until now.
Am I the only one who is confused? Perhaps it's just a web error? Link below.

And some paintings show up on this link too: http://obeygiant.com/fine-art/stencil-collage

Re: HPMs or Paintings?
Great, so you're saying that this HPM
http://thegiant.org/wiki/index.php/High ... _Cover_HPM
is just like this HPM
http://thegiant.org/wiki/index.php/MLK_ ... e_on_Paper
Just pointing out what's being communicated on the site.

Re: HPMs or Paintings?
You're right that HPM has typically referred to screened fine art pieces on collaged paper on wood, while 'Stencil Collage' has referred to the stenciled paintings.
I wouldn't worry too much about the distinction though, because if this stuff was sold by an auction house or gallery outside of the street-art scene, it would probably be noted something like, 'Mixed media, stencil on paper' or 'Mixed media screenprint on wood, edition of 2.'

Re: HPMs or Paintings?
JErickR i think you are right in that some of the pictures loaded are in the wrong categories. ( i took a quick look and i saw the gas mask canvas in both sections )
i could be wrong, but hpm's are always screened and numbered. ( easiest way to remember )
stencil collage are sprayed (versus screened) and not numbered.
^ that's how I try to keep it straight. ec
