How to create Shepard Fairey-esque artwork?

Post by OB3YTH3GIANT »

I'm a 18 year old graphic designer (3+ years of experience) and have been inspired and obsessed with Shepard Fairey's art style. Yeah some people might think im stealing his style but what's inspiration without getting inspired by other things? Anyway, lately i've been trying to create an original graphic with Shep's 3-color art style but have been disappointed with the results i had typed in on google. I came to try and find a straight forward answer on how to create his style artwork using photoshop, illustrator, etc. And yes, im quite familiar with adobe products so you can go into detail on the steps it takes to create such an image. Much appreciated :D

Welcome! Don't worry, every artist save for the first caveman is influenced by their predecessors - however, having a unique recognizable style will set you apart and increase your chances for success.

I have my gallery set up on my Instagram if you want to check my stuff out :) link: http://instacanv.as/_m_a_r_s_
I've only really tried to make something like his stuff once and that was an ok piece. I don't like making pieces that i have know could be done better so im holding off on making that type of art until i get his style down.

Your selling Steve powers and banksy rip offs through your site?

Pretty obvious why you want to recreate sheps style! Why don't you come up with your own artwork!!!!

I don't have a problem with anybody copying the work of others in order to learn. Every artist/designer/creative does it to some extent. I think the issue here is copying someone's work (or multiple people's work for that matter) and then selling it as your own. I think you need to re-evaluate what you show publicly and what you do privately as part of your own creative process. If you don't develop a clear line in your mind between those two things, your work will never have integrity.

if you click around that site, or at least what I did, everything is for sale. Its a pic dump that you can select this image or that image. Don't think he is selling anything purposfully. That being said he is knocking/ripping off some artists, but who isnt there days
Check out what i have for sale or trade and my wants:
