Hi. I'm new.

Post by jlee »

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and to collecting prints (not to collecting in general, I've previously been down the rabbit hole on books, 1/6 scale figures and more). I'd love any guidance or advice anyone can offer when it comes to getting into print collecting. I have limited funds and space - I know, I should just leave now - but I'm a photographer who loves art and design, and I keep coming around to Shepard Fairey and others who have a unique vision and fresh design that is pleasing to the eye.

Tonight is the first time I've ever bought a print - I bought the "Drop in the Bucket" signed and numbered that I know people likely view as a dog along the lines of "Big Proof Forever" when it comes to a collectible print, but at $50 I thought it was a safe venture to start.

So let me have it - I want advice, guidance, insight (and I suppose I'll take the insults and criticism too) - whatever I can glean. Thanks for a great resource in this forum.

Hi mate , the best advice i could offer is to not get carried away with buying anything and everything when you first step into the hobby , I now look back at my first 4-6 month buying frenzy and question my sanity of why on earth I bought stuff by the artists I did . i would hate to do the maths on what they cost me , the prices of the prints themselves / the $40-$60 postage costs from the usa-uk / the wrongly applied vat rate when they landed in the country and I didnt know how to claim it back ..horrendous to think about.

Make sure your on the right page come "drop day" , again , I was one the wrong page completly for 3 drops in a row when i first started to collect Obey prints

Take a long leisurely look through the "prints off the beaten path" thread and follow the links , there are still lots of Shepard Fairey prints produced for various causes/individuals available on there for primary market prices.

Good luck and welcome , oh and by the way , I like the drop in the bucket print for what its worth :D

If you have limited funds then just buy from Obey when the prints are dropped on the website. Only buy those you like. Good luck and welcome to the board.

Like the rest of us, start looking at the "classic era" prints where Shepard hand-pulled them and put them on white paper, 1995-1999, approximately. And like you're already doing, go with the image you personally like, followed by what seems to resonate with the masses if you're looking for a print to impress and be the cornerstone of your collection. As for risk, most of Shep's prints have gone up in value to some degree (some more than others) and just about everyone knows who he is now. But find your niche of what images you like best (e.g. politics, music, iconic portraits, etc.) and go for it. Welcome to the board!

Buy what you like, not what you think is for monetary gain. Golden advice I got years ago.
