Re: How to handle a local in person sale

Post by submethod »

Just to keep you guys posted....the conversation has turned interesting.

"Ok thanks,i just want to know more about it to make sure they are in great condition so can you assure me i will not be disappointed???And also ,I need to inform you about this, just received an email from my pick agent...am most sure i did not include that in my previous email,They said they won't come for the pick up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time.I am a Chief Engineer as my position on the sea here,I am so busy and can not pay the agent fees from here as they Requested that i pay them with Money Gram.So what i will do here is that i will send the payment in the total amount of $11,200.So once you receive the confirmation of the payment from PayPal,you will deduct the promised amount for the good which is $10,200 and the remaining $1,000 will be send down to my agent By Money Gram.I have tried to paid it direct here but there is no Money Gram on the ship and am not here with my credit card to do it here online,So i believe you can handle this for me.

Get back to me so that i can go ahead and send the payment now"

How many red flags can you count?

Here , took me less than 30 seconds to find this example...

Just search on Google for "overpayment scam" for loads of other examples of the same thing

Well , the worse they can do with your email address is sell it on to someone else marked as "potentially gullible" , which unfortunately you are ...or were! ...don't worry too much about that.

Phone numbers I'm not so sure about ? ...but it may be as well to inform the cops about it , highly unlikely they can do anything about it , other than to collate evidence ....don't worry you won't be the only one they've done this on.

I think it'll be fine. I am just bummed that it was a hoax or at least appeared that way.

Guy I worked for once was ready to provide a bank account number because a foreign prince he was speaking to online wanted to make a deal with him where money would be transferred or this that or the other thing... It took a minute to convince him not to call the guy back :D

Sketchy stuff sub, had the same thing happen to me when I was selling a car on ebay. I was all excited to make the deal off ebay when I accepted their offer. But things felt shady when there was talk of sending me a certified check for a greater amount than was due which got me researching and led me to this place we are now. Glad you asked!

Well, it looks like the drama is over. Here is the email i sent.

"Seeing how you are being so generous with your offers and that you an engineer on a boat. How about you sail your boat over to San Pedro harbor and we could do the exchange there. I will bring my notary in a smaller boat and she will sign off on the whole deal. That way, you wont have to pay an additional $1000 bucks for the fee. Let me know what you think. Think you can sail your boat to me?"

Wow ....if your still up for it I'll take them all for $10,000 ?

I'm currently on holiday in Lagos at the moment , so if it's agreeable to you I'll send you $11,500 as an act of trust via my CC funded paypal account , of which $1500 extra is to pay for the packaging , if the cardboard tube packaging costs less than $1500 then keep an extra $100 for your trouble and send me the remainder in used notes or a Western Union money gram along with the prints ....

Great thread, glad you made it out ok submethod! After many, many local deals through craigslist for various items I could tell something was definitely off with that message. Glad you were cautious! Those prints were far too nice for that shitboat.
