New to this ..

Post by jmochnick »

Hi all,

First a bit of background .. I attended a Shepard Fairey exhibit in 2008/09 at the Andy Warhol museum. I went there on a field trip, no idea who Shepard Fairey was, and ever since I have been amazed at his work. I am not one who is super into art, or collect many pieces, but Fairey intrigues me. Some of the messages he conveys is great, and just the general direction he goes with his art, I love it.

That being said, I am looking to purchase some of his work. I understand that he does random print releases on his site, however I was quick to find out that these quickly sell out and people immediately flip them on ebay. That is unfortunate but my question is, what is the best way to go about acquiring some of his work? I am very interested in some more 'original' work than screen prints, but that may not be in my price range at all. My budget is currently about $300-400.

Some pieces I am interested in:

- Obey Eye
- Peace Bomber
- Pay Up or Shut Up
- Keep it Underground
- Flag
- I am interested in many, many more, but these are just some of the ones I can recall off the top of my head!

So where is the best place to locate and purchase his work? I have browsed through the forums here, but many of it appears to be work that is out of my price range.

Thank you so much in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

His original/fine art work starts in the thousands... cheapest would be for pieces like the album covers which start around $2k. The ones you're looking for come in different formats (screen print on metal, screen print on wood, hand painted multiples on paper, hand painted multiples on wood, stencils, canvases, rubyliths, etc, etc) but the prices for those can be much higher and much harder to obtain.

a budget of $300-400 will only get you screen prints

On the positive side of the ledger, $300-400 should buy you the print version of any of the images you have listed.

Thanks for the info guys! I figured with my budget I would only be looking at screen prints.

Do either of you (or anyone for that matter!) have suggestions on where to acquire screen prints? I understand they are limited so they are a bit scattered throughout the internet. I know here and eBay are great places so far, but any sites in particular that you would recommend?

Have a browse through this thread and click on a few links ,many are now sold out but there are still quite a few that are still available at reasonable prices.

A few have found it helpful , one found it to be a complete waste of everyones time , make up your own mind.

www.expressobeans.com

it is an ok source for pricing because sometimes people include bogus sales and you can also find some of the prints you are looking for. A word of warning though, people on EB can be a bit suspicious of those new to the site. If you buy something never, ever pay as a gift.

Excellent point. Print I bought from forum member in the last 4 years include Andre-Hendrix, Weak, physics, square bomber, Lenin, tank.......too many to list. Some of which i would never have found if not for the people right here. I'd say that this is the best place to find rare Obey print. Thanks to all who made it possible.
