suggestion: "work safe" version of the forum

Post by bboygraphix »

okay, so i've been visiting thegiant forum at work a lot lately and i always find myself trying to scroll down to hide the banners at the top.

my office is a typical cube farm and managers are always walking by. i don't want one of them to catch a glimpse of our "man with pipe" or "deadly" at the top of the site and have them ask me "is that website work related?"

can we make a work-safe version of the forum that hides the banners (not advertisements) and maybe even avatars? it would be as simple as setting a tbody or div tag around the banner image and placing a "hide banner" link somewhere in the corner (to the right of the "register" link?).

just curious.. anyone else interested in something like this?

adam, i'd be willing to put in the work to make it happen. ;)

btw, i'm well aware that the network admins are logging our browsing history. however, they don't really look into people's history unless they suspect a decrease in productivity... or catch you in the act. i'm trying to avoid the latter.

I voted no to this because it's easy to do on the client side. Use Firefox, install Adblock and then add the following filters:

http://forum.thegiant.org/images/avatars/*
http://forum.thegiant.org/templates/sof ... rotate.php

That will remove the banner and avatars. You can remove anything else by just right-clicking on it and choosing ok.

huh...I think I have a link to a site which will bounce you from one site and mask the actual site you are going to from a few of the regular web filters that most offices use for blocking

Luckily they don't seem to care much at my office

yeah, honda's standard is IE (SUCKS!!!) and we are blocked from workfriendly.net and installing new software.

as far as the avatars go, it's just a thought... i'd have to see the source to figure it out, but i'm sure it's not too difficult.

You can disable pictures and flash animations on your browser too.

I might be the only one who thinks this, but the banners at the top concern you at work? You might want to talk to your boss Mr. Hitler.

haha. they're no Hitler.. but i do like to play it safe. and plus, it was just a thought which is why i created the poll.

the banner would concern you too if you sat near your team lead, project manager, and the department manager. they are constantly walking to/from their desks and curious eyes tend to glance at computer monitors. amazingly, there are no private offices here. everyone including managers have a cube. even the president/CEO of honda of has a cubicle! granted, it's a full-height cube. everyone else has the 4ft tall cubicle walls so you can see clear across the room. :)

How can you be a web applications programmer and not have access to more than just IE? Who tests them to see if they work in other browsers?

nobody tests them in FF. haha. we only support IE.

it kills me because outside my 9-5 i'm a devoted FireFox user and i always check cross-browser compatibility for all my freelance jobs ;)

Same boat here... would love a feature like this. It would probably be relatively simple to have this be a feature someone can turn on in their profile; maybe that checkbox just forces the user to use a different stylesheet?

I agree with this idea, I have seen it on other forums, so it should be possible.

If someone wants to rewrite the php and css ill install it.
