Ai WeiWei
Caught this short doc on Frontline tonight about Ai WeiWei, well worth the time, about 18 mins.
http://video.pbs.org/video/1862488102/
I had seen his name recently but didn't know much about him, he was recently imprisoned in China:
"Ai Weiwei, a Chinese artist, is internationally renowned for his artwork and known worldwide for his public criticism of the Chinese government. He was arrested on April 3 by Chinese authorities, and hasn’t been heard from since. Mr. Ai was one of the designers of the Bird’s Nest stadium of Beijing Olympics fame and has exhibited his artwork, often laden with political messages, around the world."

I saw the pics of the Tate sunflower seeds a while back, was amazed that it took two years and all were hand made.
I think this is a great video, showing the process

Gotta see them while I was in London in January. Very impressive to see hand crafted multiples on that scale.rlbchef wrote:I saw the pics of the Tate sunflower seeds a while back, was amazed that it took two years and all were hand made.

Apparently, Ai has 'confessed' to charges of bigamy, tax evasion and spreading pornography. Not looking good.

Did he state this or was it the government speaking for him?

Global protests calling for his release this weekend.

The plan is for protesters to gather with chairs and stage a sit-in outside their local Chinese embassy or consulate at 1pm, local time, on Sunday April 17.

Poor bugger, sounds like he's stuck his neck out a little too far now.

Huffington Post wrote:The demonstrations, largely nonviolent but often tensely attended by police, supported a guerrilla art campaign that has begun to infiltrate the city, with artists racing government cleaning crews to keep stencils of Ai's beleaguered face visible in the streets.

Ai Weiwei released!
"China's official state media reported Wednesday that artist Ai Weiwei has been released from detainment, though the exact terms of his release remain unclear. Ai had been in detainment since early April, when he was seized by Chinese authorities while trying to travel from Beijing to Hong Kong."

FYI
Paul Kasmin Gallery Inaugurates Its New Gallery Space at
515 West 27th Street, New York
Book Launch for Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals and the Garden of Brightness on November 17th, 2011, 6 – 8pm
Paul Kasmin Gallery announces the opening of its second gallery space in Chelsea, located at 515 West 27th Street. Designed by architect Markus Dochantschi of studioMDA, the 2500 square-foot, sky-lit gallery space has a glass façade that allows pedestrians to see inside the gallery from the street.
On November 17th from 6pm to 8pm, the new gallery opens with a book launch for Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals, edited by Susan Delson and published by Prestel in association with AW Asia. It includes texts by Paola Dematte, Colin Jones, Kristina Kleutghen, Lark E. Mason, Charles Merewether, Marco Musillo, Karen Smith, and Joe-Hynn Yan. It is 222 pages with 180 illustrations, 165 of which are in color. Hardcover, 10 x 11 inches.
On view for the first time, the gold set of Ai Weiwei’s bronze sculptures, Zodiac Heads (2010), will be shown from November 17th through December 23rd, 2011 in conjunction with the book launch. The twelve animal heads, each depicting a segment of the ancient Chinese zodiac, are based on a complex fountain and clock system that was built for an imperial retreat in 18th century China. Located at the Old Summer Palace just outside Beijing, the original fountain-clock was designed by two European Jesuits at the behest of Emperor Qianlong. When the retreat was looted by European soldiers, the bronze animal heads were stolen and only seven of the twelve are known to survive. Ai Weiwei has re-interpreted these objects, pursuing his ongoing exploration of the “fake” and the copy of the original, as well as the repatriation of cultural heritage. Ai Weiwei’s larger bronze set of Zodiac Heads is on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through February 12th, 2012.

Re: Ai WeiWei
i was thinking the exact same thing. dude could go down as one of the top artists of the half century. Would be nice to touch something......
Who's got my old stickers?
Re: Ai WeiWei
My mind is completly blown these are still sitting there available
Re: Ai WeiWei
They are design pieces and they are collaborations to boot, so they are not desirable to collectors.
Re: Ai WeiWei
That porcelain disk is pretty f'n cool!
Re: Ai WeiWei
Exactly. IMO it's because they're not just AWW by himself that they're still around.password wrote:They are design pieces and they are collaborations to boot, so they are not desirable to collectors.

Re: Ai WeiWei
I am personally so psyched to have been able to score one of these...the colaboration is an amazing team and the print image is quite nice. On top of that, how often do you get a chance at a print signed by AWW?
