Banksy's "Artist in Residence" Video for 18th Annual Webby Awards

Banksy

The Webby Awards is proud to honor Banksy as Person of the Year for his “Better Out Than In” show in New York City this past October. Though the artworks themselves were primarily painted or staged on physical objects in New York, the true showcase took place on screens across the world. The curiosity and intrigue was palpable across all forms of digital media. 350,000 people followed Banksy’s one-month, one-picture-a-day Instagram account. Particular pieces delved even deeper, leading viewers from Instagram to digital works on his (now bare) website. New Yorkers followed the roving exhibit on Foursquare and posted photos and videos to Tumblr, Vine, YouTube, and Twitter (where #banksy was used over 38,000 times during the month), and appreciating fans around the world tuned in. Not many people would make a logical connection between graffiti and the Internet, but Banksy not only showed the world what that looks like, but he made people care about it, too. For providing a glimpse into the potential future of art on the Web, Banksy truly deserves to be named Webby Person of the Year.

So you're saying the Dumbo represents Banksy prints and the "terrorists" represent us the collectors/flippers/consumers.

Official Banksy prints are unlikely any time soon. However just about any image he does is available shortly after from all sorts of "reproduction" houses.

I am proud to announce the release of Banksy in New York, the ultimate companion to Banksy's month-long project on the streets of New York in October, 2013.

As some of you know from following me on Flickr or Instagram, I have been shooting Banksy’s work around the world for many years. Banksy’s return to New York for his Better out than in project coincided with a “strategic restructuring” at my work … so I was free to get photos of most of the pieces and was there for many of the incidents that defined the residency.

Banksy in New York offers a first-hand day-by-day account of the residency: the defacement and removal of several pieces, reactions from neighbors and building owners and interactions between Banksy’s fans and foes. I tried to put Banksy’s work into the context of street art and graffiti in New York and to round it out, I got help from some expert contributors, such as photographer Luna Park and Flip the Script author Christian Acker. The result, I hope, is more than just a collection of images, but a comprehensive look at the impact Banksy’s work had on New York for that one month.

And just to be totally clear: Banksy was not involved in the making of this book, and not a single dollar will go to any water charity. But I hope if he reads it he’ll get a laugh out of it. And hopefully so will you. In any case, I had a lot of fun working on this book and I really look forward to your feedback.

- Ray

Banksy in New York features over 120 photos and illustrations on 120 pages and will be available starting August 15, 2014 in a limited edition with a screenprinted cover via Carnage NYC. (Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition will be used to produce a hardcover edition.) Thanks for your support!

It is NOT a banksy print, it's a "I saved a Banksy" print.

Kind of a huge difference.
