I got a show! Carmel by-the-Sea, CA a once bohemian artist escape for writers like Jack London and photographers like ansel adams and painters like salvador dali and eyvind earle. now just a commercial bad art golf town- but i do love it so and my memories of moving here just at the end of it goodness at 19 in 1989 before the internet let just any azzhole work from anywhere he could buy.

this gallery usually shows "Dead Guy Art" but once a year the do a local show.

bio-
Andrew Thomas Jackson

born 1970 Anaheim, CA

I moved to Carmel, CA at age 19 to become “one of the
greatest painters of my time”.

Being taken in by an artist' town, I was lucky to be
given a wealth of knowledge both in techniques and the
possibilities in the art world. I was sometimes
referred to as the bastard son of Jack London's bar,
having friendships with both great artists and their
gallery owners. I was given freely their guidance,
wisdom, and happy hour food for years. They all know I
valued it and I made sure none of it was wasted.

I had early success in gallery shows and was published
in fine prints and note cards before opening my own
art gallery at 25. I closed after three years, finding
I was good at both art and business, but more
effective doing just one or the other.

My style grows and changes as I discover the next
exciting possibility but everything I ever paint is
just all about Color.

I have collected art since my first painting sold,
knowing the need to have the exchange with art that
affects us in ways I can't describe.

It is always nice to show in "Carmel by-the Sea" my
hometown.

You're work is beautiful. Your rendering of lighing is amazing and is what draws
me in most to these pieces. Creates a very dramatic mood.

Thanks for the nice feedback everyone.

This show meant a lot.
At 19 my biggest goal was to show my art in a gallery on Ocean Ave in Carmel by the Sea.
The rent on ocean is 20,000. a month so not only does the art have to be strong but it must be worthy of taking a great risk by the gallery and after it was explained to me at a young age I set the personal goal. Even just one block off ocean, my first solo gallery's rent was 1000. per month in 95' . every step away from ocean the rent and its visiters to carmel drop down in numbers quickly.

This gallery usually sells Pissaro's and Rembrants and verified Dali and Klee prints but one show a year they show locals-Anyways I got to take a loophole and satisfy the kid in me's dream and it f'n counts

They even put me in the window
Image

And after sizing this guy up as not a buyer, I told him that my champagne told me I should refer to him from some moment in our conversation that his new name was William Schatner and after his defeated stance against this he permitted his renaming

it was a huge mob. the gallery was 3000,sq ft. i could not move through the bluehairs for fear of breaking hips. they kept everyones champagne filled all night.
6 local artists, so all of their collectors showed and you could tell who they were loyal to(invested in). the local magazines and a few celebs i did not know their name from the freedom fields non proffit (dina eastwood ( as in Clint) she was out of town) were there and my highlights were- the director of the monterey museum of art gave me a congradulatory nod and shook my hand, and hanging out with schatners doppleganger  oh and my dad drove up from fullerton for the show :D also artists Anne Faith Nicholls and Jacob Arden McClure met me at the gallery earlier in the day to view the show with me when you could see it all
I kept it sorta together till we hit the bars and danced with my wife 1st time since our wedding- glad there are no pics of that. thats how hammered champagne then vodka works

Andrew,

That is all fantastic. It's awesome that you got to fulfill an early goal like that. More power to you. How long did it take you to put that many pieces together?

all the paintings except "Bosso's" (pool player) were started and completed in 3.5 months. I started 3 at a time and when these were in their finishing detailing stages I started three more...
I painted "Bosso's" in 2 long days 3 years ago it is 6' x 6'

I paint in a three stage process-
block-in = house paint size brushes using the decided color I sketch in the image as the whole canvas thinly and go over in thick paint all in one sitting.

Knife-in - I put heavy amounts of paint on using palette knives (I load the knives with three diferrent colors and these mix off the knife as I apply.

Detail - I glaze in and over darks and punchy colors and hit all the highlights with both knife and brush.

I beat the hell out of the canvases and have to pound the corner keys in to display them or they sag. I sometimes slice through canvases and often catch them as they fly off the easel when hitting them with brushes. wife calls me "Bruce"

I blast fast loud music and listen to it or scream to it so I don't think or critique what I'm doing thus I can't dance I use music and only want to paint when I hear it

yes giclee on canvas, it was supposed to be an edition but the publisher went bad and started to mess with me, so there are only 10 but numbered as /100

this video of me was shot in year 2000 I was 30 years old and at this time I was only an artist. meaning I only painted paintings I did not know street art and had not even imagined I would open the outer edge studio and had not had to get a job at a fine art giclee print house and would have never thought I would start my own publishing house

tell you the truth I think I murdered the artist in this film and left him in a ditch somewhere in the last 9 years

this is video that was further edited and aired on public access tv here in Monterey, CA in year 2000 it was shot in my old loft above the main street in downtown Monterey, CA. I had been a career artist from 19 on my own my only income was from artwork sold or bartered I consistently sold paintings for as much as 18k til around 2002 when my tastes changed and I started collecting art more than painting it. I still paint but very rarely and for some reason not much passion for it anymore
