Skate Unity art show update!

The Rodney Mullen deck ended with four bids, and sold for $55. The winner's name was on the bid list twice, so it's cool that he won it. Everyone was hovering around it, touching it, talking about it all night, it was definitely a hit. People weren't bidding on anything though. There were a lot of people there, coming and going, heavy flow of people, but a lot of the decks didn't get any bids. There was a bunch of great art at crazy low ending prices!

The place had a weird set up, most decks were laying out like this on a concrete ledge all the way around the building, some were on folding tables. The Silent auction ran from 7 to 9PM.

I have a few new things in the works thanks to the help of my social media guru wife.

Some commissioned pieces and a new spray paint/stencil David Bowie print in the very near future.

Please check out our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/skooladesign or follow on twitter http://www.twitter.com/skooladesign

We will have our etsy shop up and running when the prints are finished, selling prints, higher end wood pieces, and even custom car emblems.

Thought I would post some finished images of "Rise Again" that I entered in the art comp. I didn't have a chance to clear coat or compose my artists' statement in time for the contest deadline.

Image
Image

"Anyone who knows me understands that I am not a religious person. That being said when I was approached to create this unique piece of art I was excited and a little overwhelmed because I wanted to do justice to the subject matter.

I had to take time (too much to be honest) to reflect and find the passion and drive within. I realized that it is not the religion you worship, if any at all, but a basic set of morals and guidelines to live your life.

The title of this piece is "Rise Again" not only due to the depiction of Jesus but also the production process helped rekindle the artistic growth that I strive for in my own life."

Here is a piece I did for an ex-bandmate of mine who is obsessed with Jordan shoes. It's based off of the Jordan VI and it has his emcee name "VHD" on the ankle. 1/4" woodcuts, spraypaint and stencil.

Last Friday I had a piece in a group show at the Q5 Gallery here in Lawrence, KS. The show was called "Brownbacklash" due to Kansas governor Sam Brownback cutting all funding to the arts in Kansas. I wanted to show the beauty of Kansas arts so I came up with a re-imagining of the the state seal.

The outer ring has engraved letters between the petals which spell out "ad astra per aspera" the state motto meaning "through hardships to the stars". The latin phrase in the middle above the wind turbines is "ex astrum in posterus" meaning "from the stars into the future".

Each piece of wood is individually cut out and stained a different color giving a nice "pop out" 3D look that I've used in my past Biggie and Waylon Jennings pieces. Overall the piece is 28"x28"

Here are some process pics followed by the finished piece titled "ex astrum in posterus".
