Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
$730k. Higher than I thought it would fetch!
Most drymounted stuff I see on the bay goes for much less than that.

Here's a fun one. Mr Spray 2004 HPM on wood 2/2.
This exact one sold for $6k in 2009; silkscreen on wood 2/2 last sold for $10.4k in 2012. Any guesses as to what this'll go for?

$8750 w/BP. Not bad, but lower than I'd have guessed!

I see that you know the subject so, out of curiosity, what was the original price of the 2x pieces in 2004?bsharp wrote:$8750 w/BP. Not bad, but lower than I'd have guessed!
Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
HPMs on wood in that period were around $500-750. By 2005 they were $750 from galleries.Addict wrote:I see that you know the subject so, out of curiosity, what was the original price of the 2x pieces in 2004?bsharp wrote:$8750 w/BP. Not bad, but lower than I'd have guessed!

Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
Hope's back, and there was one produced on canvas.
https://www.einnews.com/pr_news/6294765 ... ay-6th-7th
[Emphasis is theirs]Day 2 - Sunday, May 7th, the modern and contemporary art sale will feature the original work HOPE by Shepard Fairey, in 2008 - the FIRST and ONLY canvas artwork made of the iconic image. Art Dealer and SM Auctions Founder Robert Berman considers this special consignment by Shepard Fairey to be “an iconic masterpiece of the 21st Century” which has become a symbol of hope and inspiration for many globally. The original artwork, HOPE, was created in 2008 for the Barack Obama’s historic presidential campaign and has since become an iconic image used in many political campaigns and social movements. Two LATER, larger versions were created: ONE RESIDES IN THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION’S NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, and THE OTHER SOLD AT HERITAGE AUCTIONS IN MAY, 2022 FOR $735,000.
This unique lot is being offered at SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS, is described as: Mixed-Media Stenciled Collage on Canvas, unique, 2008, Signed and dated on recto, Image: 48 x 31 inches, Framed: 49 3/4 x 33 inches with an estimate of $1,000,000 - $1,200,000. The auction house has also acquired the original unique framed stencil used to make this canvas by Shepard Fairey which is estimated at $400,000 - $500,000.

Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
The Hope OGs are interesting. They keep popping up, and in different mediums and sizes. Of course I'm nowhere near in the estimated range they've given to get one myself, but I'm curious to see how these ones do.
Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
Canvas sold for $975k + BP, about $1.25M total.

Re: Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion
Thanks for that!
I’m not surprised with those outcomes, but it’s always been strange that MANW continues to get lots of attention, considering how many versions of it there have been. I suppose it’s like Liberte Jr.
