Shepard Fairey / Obey Auction Discussion

Post by jak88 »

Instead of separate postings on the occasional auction results for Shep's work, maybe we should have one thread for this (if one does not exist yet) ...

Today at Phillips: Under the Influence - March 8, 2013

War by Numbers stencil collage on paper (2007): Sold for $50K (above its estimate)

Super strong price for a 44x30 paper piece. Of course it is a very popular image, but still...

IMO, the end result of that auction was pretty close to where it was supposed to be.
Some HPM's of that size are fetching 20K + now.

I don't know if Artnet auctions always follow through with payment, but this auction result again surprises if legit (there was only 1 bid) ...

i think it would have done much better with a proper description of the piece. if i had consigned this to bonhams and it were listed like this i would be raising a stink.

All the auctions except the Banksy's seemed to do bad.

Bonhams sucks.

3 Shepard Fairey lots:

Signed Obama 'Change' - 2500GPB - strong result

'Duality of Humanity' with a picture of Public Enemy - 750 - who knows WTF they actually sold here

Global Target - Did not sell against an estimate of $12-18K. Wonder why? Maybe because we all could have bought it from Pace for $6K last year (and still might be able to - did this even sell out?). It also doesn't help when the provenance is listed as "Gallery 618, ST. Louis, acquired from the above by the present owner.' Obviously the present owner is Gallery 618 and they acquired it from Pace, since Gallery 618 is just a flipper with a storefront.

Absolutely disgraceful, although I'm amazed no one actually bothered to check the listing before the lots were published. I know I would, if it were mine. The owner should pulled it from Bonhams straight away, no messing.

Unless the consignor was the one who provided the information. What could have happened was that there was a confusion between the name of the piece and the name of the exhibition it came from at White Walls. The consignor may have believed the name of the show to be the piece name.

Even if that's the case, this is supposed to be their high profile feature 'Urban Art Auction.' Whatever it is they're selling , the description/picture is inexcusable.

Five minutes on Google would be sufficient to identify any piece of Shep's art from the last 6 years.

They're supposed to be the experts here...

What I'm saying is that if the consignor f'ed up and the auction house f'ed up as well, then the consignor really can't go to them and make a stink for their own f'ing up. Would you?
