if you're a fan of the colbert report, you can probably get into see a taping by doing the stand-by thing. my friends and i did it in june. just go by the studio (513 W 54th, between 10th & 11th aves) at 4pm on a taping day - they'll put your name on the stand-by list, you return a bit later (around 6, i think) and find out if there are enough extra seats. when we went, they were able to admit all the stand-by peeps and it was crazy awesome.
(i am sure the daily show has a similar deal, but it is so much more popular that it's probably harder to get in.)

tip of the day, pt 2: don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk with your head up in the air. you'll get a crick in your neck.
don't forget to check out peep world on 33/7th ave.

Take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Unfortunately, most of the galleries are closed for the summer so museums are your only option for art.
Night life? Depends on what you're up for. Drinks @ Manitoba's (99 Ave B), Motor City Bar (127 Ludlow), Lit Lounge (93 2nd Ave). If you head to these bars you can eat at Katz's Deli if you go to Motor City Bar, Dok Suni (amazing Korean) if you go to Lit.
Also live music around Motor City Bar (The Cake Shop, Mercury Lounge, Arlene's Grocery, Piano's, Living Room, Bowery Ballroom).
Don't know if you'll make it to Brooklyn so I'll hold those suggestions.
Have fun.

[quote="kandiman"]Thanks guys those are great places. Unfortunately I'm stuck where I'm staying (7th and 51st). My girl's mom planned the trip and she's paying. Mom loves the tourist stuff and eventually we'll get away from that for a bit. Any night life suggestions?[/quote

Re: Please help me with my NYC visit
Anyone have any updates for this list? I am going to be there for a week in March with a couple friends from school and an artist. We will mostly be looking at architecture, and hitting the major touristy spots, but are looking for some cool galleries, lesser known buildings, restaurants and stuff to hit up as well. We are staying with a friend in Queens and will be there from March 7-14 if you know anything going on during that time.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!

Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese
345 East 12th Street, NY, NY 10003
212-358-7912, 212-358-7917
ridiculously tasty.
there's also a place (i forget the name) REALLY close by that serves only chocolate in MANY forms!

And do go to the Brooklynite Gallery - Zbiok (Poland) and Remed (France) Have a show from Feb 28-Mar 22... the stuff gets more amazing everytime you look at it.

Go to Cafe Habana for the fire-roasted corn on the cob. It will change your whole perception of things, it's that good.
Eisenbergs on 5th Ave between 22nd and 23rd streets (across from the flat iron building - **tourist spot**) has the best breakfast sandwich in the history of breakfast sandwiches.
For a delicious hot pastrami sandwich, go to Katz's (or second avenue, or schwartz's). Carnegie has the name, but the sandwich isn't the best (bigger doesn't mean better), it's crowded, and the service is awful. Hell, I'd rather go to Stage Deli across the street.
For cheap eats hit up the comfort or skylight diners in chelsea/midtown, both are excellent choices.

The chocolate place near smac he is talking about is Max Brenner. I would highly recommend NOT going there as it is an overpriced tourist trap. If you want good chocolate go to Jacques Torres in DUMBO, brooklyn.
If you want the best breakfast sandwiches in the city, go to Downtown Bakery on 1st ave between 4th and 5th street.
