South by Southwest: Austin OG Mural Shots and other things

Post by Mira263 »

I was told last night by a few different people, none of which are connected that Shepard will be back again this year for SXSW here in Austin. I will once again be dilligently looking for new stuff going up around the city. Supposed to be playing the Red Bull Moon Tower party, which is invite only. I have not found out how to get an invite... yet. If anyone has a clue, drop me a line!!!!

Just wondering if anyone else from the boards will be down for this years overcrowding of austin?

It sounds like he is going to be installing a mural at UT that week:

The installation will be located on the exterior of the Art Building (ART) at the corner of 23rd Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. The artist’s team will install his original composition at this location. The general public and media are welcome to attend.

UT Install has been postponed indefinitely.

"The Landmarks project to create a mural by street artist Shepard Fairey has
been postponed until further notice. The work was intended for the Art
Building (ART) at The University of Texas at Austin and would have been
created on 19 March 2009.

The artist approached the College of Fine Arts with an idea to create a
mural on one of its buildings earlier this month.

³We jumped at the opportunity and set the wheels in motion to take advantage
of his offer,² says Landmarks director Andrée Bober. ³Shepard¹s work is
important and perfectly suited to our program, but it was ambitious to try
to pull it off in just one week. Unfortunately, we ran out of time.²

Dean of the College of Fine Arts, Doug Dempster would like to reschedule the
event. ³We would still like to see his work here on campus, but the
compressed schedule makes it too difficult at this time. As dean of Fine
Arts, I felt that we were rushing the process with an important artist and
an important installation. I decided that it would be better to slow down
and proceed in a more deliberate fashion. I'm sorry that we could not move
fast enough for this project to happen.²

Zarathustra James, Fairey¹s representative said it was great of Landmarks to
welcome Fairey¹s work, but that they understood the logistical challenges.
³Shepard would definitely be interested in a future project,² said James.
³With a little more planning, he¹ll even be able to get involved with the
faculty and students.²"

Newest Shepard Fairey mural in Austin @ 1415 South Congress (Home Slice Pizza).

EDIT: and it was built using, in part, both Israel/Palestine AND the mythical Peace Elephant.

Decent selection of screens on wood - the afrocentric and lotus ornament are good ones (depending on the price)

Some solid detailed Mike Giant pieces there

I'll be at the show tonight, so hit me up if you're there. I'll be the sunburned guy wearing the (I think) Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to F^ck" shirt. (But look for the green Chucks, just in case.)

It was cool little shindig. High price tags though, $2500 for the woods, $2200 for album covers I believe.

They have a War for Sale Red, and a Revolution woman with brush(both on wood), plus about 8 different album covers, all similar to the ones from the white walls show.

Also, the Install at Home Slice is pretty sweet. Features Commanda with Israel/Palestine and the peace elephant as admonkey said. Crappy Iphone photos at night won't do it justice so I'll have to go back and get some better shots to post up.

I'm still here, but looking for a window to head back home. Don't know if I'll make the install or not, but if I do I'm in an orange Ramones shirt.

I'm pretty sure the Red 7 install will be a Nick and Z show. I think Shepard's already on his way out of town.

What time is it going up? I want to get some fish tacos in me before I head back. Conflicts, conflicts.

EDIT: never mind; looks like I'll be there.
