artist's statement: dinosaur fossil, tank, 100 dollar bill images - present vs history, fossil vs crucifix, religion vs science, earth vs man, nature vs technology, soil vs metal, the real vs the virtual, and the constant pursuit of military and financial world dominance.
an original verse in ink on piece:
"The surface crumbles but remains, re-shifting through time, bone and soil, blood and metal, clean and simple."
(more photos here, here, and here)
entry #5

entry #6

size: 11" x 14"
media: mixed media collage on canvas

entry #7
title: Capone 500
size: 18" x 24"
media: mixed media (acrylic, acrylic transfer, gold leaf, cotton material) on 1/2" birch panel
artist's statement: I created this thinking, maybe the parallels between the 30's and the current economic situation will spawn a new Capone (or perhaps Madoff, etc are already the new Capones). Used newspaper image I liked, announcing his conviction (Oct 18, 1931), and an image of the 1928 500 dollar bill that was in circulation during his time. I liked the decadence of the bill, and I really like the number. And I used an actual piece of cotton material for the handkerchief, w/ a little smear of red, as a reminder he was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. I never realized he was such a baby-faced guy (this is what he looked at around the time of his conviction in 1931). Bob Hoskins just has to play him at some point (maybe he has already?). His eyes were pretty freaky, what I might best describe as sleepy cold.
(more photos here, here, and here)

Awesome! Thank you for all the votes, and a big 'Thank you!' to all the artists that submitted stuff, this contest was full of so much great work, it was super tough to try to find the top two to vote for.
I'm really not sure what to pick for the next topic, so if you feel like working on something and want it to be an option let me know, it'd be cool to get some ideas floating around. I hope we can keep the momentum going!
Did you know who the person in the Funnyman piece is?
